WHAT IS IPL?

During a Photofacial, we use intense pulsed light (IPL). IPL therapy is a fast, non-invasive procedure that uses intense pulses of light to treat a broad spectrum of conditions including brown spots, redness and broken capillaries, acne, and excessive hair.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a form of photo rejuvenation which produces high intensity light over a broad spectrum of visible and infrared wavelengths. IPL is the gold standard for treating excessive pigmentation in the skin because it targets the specific chromophores responsible for dark spots.

Our favorite IPL treatments include pigmented lesions such as freckles and age spots, and vascular lesions such as redness and broken capillaries. We also use IPL to treat acne using Blue Light IPL, and to treat excessive hair using Laser Hair Removal.

WHAT WE DO

Before the procedure you will be given protective safety shields or glasses, and a cool gel will be applied to the skin for comfort. Broad spectrum pulsed light is transmitted through a continuously cooled crystal applicator, gently placed over the skin to target affected areas precisely.

The discomfort is mild and can be described as a warm sensation as the light is absorbed into your skin. The Average treatment time is 30 minutes, and typically, more than one treatment will be necessary. We recommend 3 treatments done 4 weeks apart for optimal results.

WHAT TO EXPECT

We call this a "lunchtime procedure" because most patients return to work the same day. You can expect mild redness after the procedure for about 24 hours. The spots temporarily get darker like coffee grinds, rise to the surface, and fade away in 1-2 weeks. Some patients experience peeling and/or scabbing.

WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT IPL?

Blue Light IPL is effective for all types of acne.  The specific wavelength for blue light is proven to kill the Propionibacterium acnes species, the bacteria responsible for acne.

WHAT WE DO & WHAT TO EXPECT

The procedure is done in the same way as our standard IPL treatment for pigmentation, but there is no downtime. We recommend 3 sessions spaced 2 weeks apart.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

WHAT WE DO

During Laser Hair Removal, we use Intense pulsed light to target and destroy the hair follicles. As the follicles heat up, their natural growth process stops and the hair is destroyed. Eventually, treated hair falls out on its own in about 2 weeks after treatment.

After the shedding process, treated hair grows back. But with each laser hair removal treatment, your hair grows back lighter and finer. Over time, permanent hair reduction results in naturally, smooth skin. It is typical to start with 6 sessions done every 6-8 weeks, and then 1-2 maintenance sessions per year.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Things to know about laser hair removal include the following:

  • While the IPL’s filter for hair removal treats a wide range of wavelengths, it's still true that laser hair removal is most effective if you have fair skin and dark hair. However, you may still be a candidate with other skin types, and fine or light hair. It doesn't work on blonde, white, or grey hair, so we recommend our clinical-grade body waxing to still get that silky smooth skin.

  • Avoid the urge to wax or pluck between each session of laser hair removal. This will reduce the efficacy of the treatment.

  • Shaving the day before laser hair removal is recommended.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL FAQs

+ Is laser hair removal permanent?

Hair can be stubborn! You might have to continue shaving occasionally after laser hair removal. Also hormonal fluctuations, especially during puberty or pregnancy, can stimulate new hair to grow in areas already treated with laser. That's why we call it laser hair reduction, not laser hair removal.

+ How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

Typically patients start with a series of 6 sessions, and 1-2 maintenance sessions per year. Patients may continue to occasionally shave after laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is most effective when hair is in the active growth stage aka the anagen phase. Because each individual hair in your body is at a different point in the growth cycle, you're going to need several treatments to increase the likelihood of targeting the hair in the anagen phase.
